Tokoshikan Bujutsu
Tokoshi means "to cross a great distance", kan means "house", bujutsu means "martial arts". Thus Tokoshikan Bujutsu translates into House of Tokoshi Martial Arts. We feel that when a person steps into a dojo to inquire about classes they have crossed a great distance. When they earn their first belt, they have crossed a great distance. When they achieve Black Belt, they have crossed a great distance and if we have done our job, they realize there is a great distance to go.
Tokoshikan Bujutsu is a method of self-defense that is the result of the blending of several martial arts into a balanced self-defense system. The system emphasizes the development of prearranged self-defense combinations for personal protection. The system also includes technical routines known as katas, that are associated with the artistic aspects of martial arts. Tokoshikan Bujutsu takes a practical approach to self-defense by drawing on the strengths of several martial arts, such as the strict, powerful movements of Karate, the flowing motions of Aikido and Aikijitsu, combined with the techniques and grappling skills of Jujitsu. As a result we are not confined by the teachings of a single style. We do not train to blindly mimic specific techniques. Instead, we teach what makes the techniques work for each individual person and when to apply it. By being exposed to the principles behind martial arts, a person is far better able to react accordingly in a threatening situation. This is the difference between practicing martial arts and being a martial artist.
While Tokoshikan Bujutsu has its roots in the Orient, it is a system born in America. Tokoshikan Bujutsu is not a style but a system comprised of several styles.
